chromium browser for linux is a beta quality software now…

Posted in open source, Review, Screenshots, software, Technology by notoveryet on October 8, 2009

I just upgraded chromium browser on my machine to¬†Chromium 4.0.222.1 (Ubuntu build 28248)“…

and now it supports,

– google chrome themes

– flash without any command line arguments (–enable-plugins)

It’s now comparable to google chrome for windows… except google-talk of course…

so I’m expecting google to announce the chromium browser as a beta software [ forget alpha ūüėČ ] soon..

???

What are you waiting for….. ¬†fire up your package manager and try it out…

chromium-4.0.222.1

chromium-themes

chromium-youtube

UPDATE:

Just found out, it still does not show new java based yahoo mail interface… so it cannot be called beta software yet….

nevertheless, we have now almost¬†perfect¬†flash support and stunning speed…

I think google will declare chromium as beta only after the implementation of some of these known problems and “google voice & video chat” support… ūüôā

want to convert/compress a video, try HandBrake….

Here is one beautiful software….¬†“HandBrake“…

it’s a “FREE and OPEN SOURCE” video conversion and compression software… and is available for following platforms:

windowsdownload link

ubuntu linux – download link for 32 bit, download link for 64 bit

mac os x – download link

source code – download link

now a days, whenever i look for any software…. ¬†my search string begins with “open source” instead of “freeware” or “shareware”… and i am gaining confidence…

i found this software quite handy and useful..

just now converted a 730 MB movie file into a 198 MB (i asked it to make 200 MB) mp4 (H264 based)….

it took around 20 minutes for 2 pass conversion, which is fine for me…. and the video quality better than what I was expecting.. ūüôā

Understanding, KDE 4 is fast !!!

Posted in Dell Inspiron 1420, Intel, KDE, KDE 4, KDE 4 on windows, KDE 4.2, KDE4, Kubuntu, Laptop, Linux, Review, Vista by notoveryet on June 7, 2009

I am using Kubuntu 9.04 – i386 as my default OS (KDE 4.2.3)…..

and I have Vista installed on my laptop too…..but do not use it….

(my notebook is Dell inspiron 1420 with intel G965 graphics)….

I have been using all the KDE 4 releases including betas and RCs on my default installation¬†which were humbly provided by Ubuntu ninjas…..and always excited with every new release because of new features and greater speed……

(using KDE, since KDE 3.4.*)

I am happy with the speed and responsiveness of the system…..

Sooo, what’s the point???

Okk, here is the thing…

today I installed KDE windows binaries, just to play with them on windows and to check how the plasma stuff runs…..

Before running KDE on windows, I had the impression that there would be some performance loss on the alien environment…..

I must admit, I’ve never seen such lightning fast applications and environment (dolphin, okular, gwenview and plasma)…..browsing pretty big pdf files on Okular…..thumbnail generation in gwenview and dolphin….everything is just snappy…….

now after using it for half an hour, native windows applications seem to me like they are running on alien plateform….

the KDE is running amazingly fast on windows……:D

I feel that KDE is running 10 times faster ūüėõ (I didn’t run any benchmark……just stunned with the performance) on windows than on my jaunty……

what is wrong???

I think, the main culprit for this poor performance is INTEL graphics…..the stack is under architectural changes…..and will improve in coming driver releases…..but I do not think they can ever improve the performance at the scale I just felt on here…..

even with Nvidia performance is not very good on linux….

or may be the whole X thing is letting the linux graphics down (speed / responsiveness)….

Closing

Just wanted to thank to KDE developers and all the people related to the project….

You are doing marvelous job….

I wish INTEL linux graphics improve soon.

So, now I can say (without any hesitation or doubt) that

KDE 4 is really faaaaaaaaaasst !!!!!

here comes THE FOUR POINT TWO…

This beta 1 of KDE 4.2 released on 26 november.
But I installed Intrepid on 23rd so I didn’t want try this beta really !
when this is the first beta and developers have not performed any code polishing here..

One more thing, my internet connection doesn’t allow me to do experiments…
but when I saw Shayak’s blog…….only 135 MB upgrades…I decided to give it a try..
but I was not going to play with my base installation……….

Wubi came to rescue…

given 5GB for one more intrepid installation inside Bindose partition…
and just given for upgradation after including experimental package sources.

after around two hours, it was ready to restart…..(was needed since kernel was upgraded too)….

What were my expectations from it…it don’t remember now…

But after 5 mins…I must say, I was amazed with the responsiveness, various plasma animations, new goodies, reworked theme…..
It was feeling like a new desktop altogether…Believe me !!!

The developers must be having some magic wand really.

The Qt on my system is 4.4.3, the new Qt (Qt 4.5) is bringing many new performance improvements and some new features.

Let me show you some of the screenshots here….

————————————————————————————————————–

Here, I’ll tell you the differences which I found from the kde 4.1 ………..

After relogin, the first changed thing I percieved was the panel…
bluish, cylindrical feel..

System-tray is absolutely clean and sharp…and no more disformation of the items…

the new Icon for the pluggedin devices makes perfact sense now….(first time user also could easily understand what would this icon do)…

I removed guidance-power-manager, since powerdevil service was running…
this is the best part…..powerdevil is just great !!!

Now, plasmoids show the notification (using the plasma itself)…
with veeeeeeeeeryyyyyyyyyyy smooth animation…..
made me say WOWWWWWWW…..

A new calander has been brought, nice….though previous one was also not that bad..

New system information plasmoids are also very useful and sleek…..

The new sliders are absolutely brilliant..thanks to Huynh Huu Long for that….

and the new progression bar…is also superb…..hmmmm…smooth…

these new improvements give you a feeling of depth and 3D in the objects…
and objects look live….

kde42-1.png

————————————————————————————————————–

kde42-2.png

————————————————————————————————————–

now the size information of the usb pendrives can be seen by just hovering the pointer on that…
the new kickoff menu has also improved greatly……

I can get more space for icons and information by removing the menu-bar and since I’ve a wide-screen
monitor it is better to keep the toolbar vertically, instead of horizontally….
Not bad, huh????

kde42-3.png

————————————————————————————————————–

some plasmoids, nothing to say here….you know what I’m saying…

kde42-4.png

————————————————————————————————————–

The new thumbnailer has been improved….very fast and smooth thumbnails….
with fantastic shadows with the images…
BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF WORK…..!!!

kde42-5.png

————————————————————————————————————–

I request you guys for one thing, here…
From nowon _never_, I mean NEVER-ever compare KDE with Vista lookwise…
for such comparision we have OS-X for God sake…

————————————————————————————————————–

the icon preview…
has been more beautified in recent SVNs…

See the Real-state available in dolphin….

kde42-6.png

————————————————————————————————————–

last plugged-i device message..can be seen by mouse hover on Plugged-in devices icon…

kde42-7.png

————————————————————————————————————–

the power-devil window…

kde42-8.png

————————————————————————————————————–

can get good realstate in konqueror too, by removing the menu bar…

kde42-9.png

————————————————————————————————————–

our beloved Amarok….
and krunner…

kde42-10.png

————————————————————————————————————–

see the new coping notification….
a very good example of the power of plasma technology….(KIO is great)

kde42-11.png

————————————————————————————————————–

the new improved progression bar
see the poor downloading speed..

kde42-12.png

————————————————————————————————————–

here, i enable the composite …

kde42-13.png

kde42-14.png

kde42-15.png
————————————————————————————————————–

After these all screenshots….
I would say, 99.99999999999% of changes are welcomed…

But there some points (personal), which I don’t comfortable with….
– The panel style….I strongly believe it’s not the final……
I don’t like Its vistaish look…
– The options in the kde applications (“File”, “Edit”, “View”, … , “Settings”) should be more similar…
for instance, some of the application don’t have “Show menubar” option…or
“Configure shortcuts” and “Configure ” are not placed in similar order in all the applications…
But we have still more than one month to fix them….

————————————————————————————————————–

I have totally no idea what KDE 4.3 and KDE 4.x would bring….
by working on this _beta-one_ software I can say….OS-X would start imitating usability and look of KDE for sure…(already using khtml) very soon….

My first laptop: Dell 1420

Posted in Dell Inspiron 1420, Intel, Laptop, Review, Technology, Vista by notoveryet on May 14, 2008

so i got my first laptop at 16th January 2008,
almost after one month when i called Dell first time.

Dell Inspiron 1420,
ruby red colour – Microsatin finish,
2GHz Intel Core2Duo T7250 800MHz FSB,
x3100 Intel graphics core,
2GB of 667MHz RAM,
160GB harddisk,
14.1″ – 1440×900 glossy screen,
2MP webcam,
8 in 1 cardReader.
bluetooth,
DVD writer,
WiFi,
100Mbit ethernet,
ExpressCard slot,
6 cell battery,
Windows Vista Home basic 32bit,
and other common stuff.

An average configuration…
cost was arround Rs. 44,000

I chosen Dell, because if you go for HP, Sony VAIO or Lenovo, the configuration I took would cost you more than Rs. 50,000 and I needed a machine as a replacement of desktop.
Not for business or for carrying around…

As first impression I found it a little heavy….
i didn’t check its weight but it seems heavier than it should have been..
but the body seems solid…since it’s made of magnesium alloy not any kind of plastic…
whatsoever, it’s pretty..

Vista Performance score I got was 3.5
CPU                             4.9
Memory                        4.8
Graphics                       3.5
Graphics productivity  3.5
HDD                             5.1

not that bad……isn’t it..
better then my friend’s VIAO.
He got 2.7 with almost same configuration (harddisk is 250GB)…

It has got pretty comfortable keyboard…

but, screen is not that good…..
it seems faded…
well, I knew it already…
still at WSXGA resolution it doesn’t affect that much….

As a opened the box, I played some default music present in vista.
Speakers are fine….good enough for a loptop computer…

…..rest in Part 2
